"The State of Migration in 2018" Event @ the BAC, December 2018 | MIKE SHAW, CHRISLYN CHOO, CARA GLEESON, JONATHAN GARRISON, BRENDAN DAVIS
Today I’m presenting a live recording of a special event I did at the Beijing American Center at the US Embassy to China back in December, 2018 with my former Migration Media partners Mike Shaw and Chrislyn Choo, plus Cara Gleeson. We were introduced by Janice Englehart at the BAC, the event was organized by Leslie Dong, and my esteemed friend and colleague Jonathan Garrison was kind enough to moderate the discussion. Enjoy!

#086: Speaking at the US Embassy in Beijing | BRENDAN DAVIS
Today I can announce that I am honored to have been invited, along with my Migration Media cohort, to speak at the US Embassy here in Beijing on Thursday, December 13 in celebration of International Migrants Day. We've put together what should hopefully be a fun and fascinating evening, and I hope you’ll join us if you can. More information and the SIGN UP link are in the blog post below.
SIGN-UPs are ONLY available through this official link from the US Embassy:

EVENT SUMMARY
With over 258 million people living outside their country of birth, the global migrant community is the fastest-growing major demographic in the world. Yet their voices are often missing from mainstream media. The population that the UN labels as “international migrants” goes by many names: Expats, foreigners, refugees, digital nomads, 海龟. But who are they? Where do they live? Why do they move? What does “home” mean for them? Living between cultures, what kind of culture do they create, and how do they impact their communities?
In honor of International Migrants Day, participate in a discussion about these questions with a diverse group of Americans who are living the migration experience in their own ways and who are working to elevate migrant stories worldwide. Speakers include Mike Shaw, Chrislyn Choo, Brendan Davis, Cara Gleeson, and Jonathan Garrison, who will share their journeys from “the nation of immigrants” to China. The program will include a presentation about the state of global migration, as well as a panel discussion about the challenges and opportunities that international migrants face when they make the choice to live outside their country of origin.

From Vintage Cars To Clean Air | SEAN KOOPMANS
#073 - From Vintage Cars To Clean Air | Sean Koopmans
This week’s episode features Sean Koopmans. Sean is a Dutch Canadian who moved to Beijing in 2002. He left a world of vintage cars and clean air and came to China, where he found little of either. There’s not much of a big local community for the former, but after some other stops along the way, he decided to do something about the latter. Enjoy!

Special Live Event: “Podcasting in the ‘Jing: A Panel Discussion”
This is a recording of a special LIVE event I was part of on July 5, 2018: “Podcasting in the ‘Jing: A Panel Discussion” along with the hosts / creators of several other great shows:
• John from China Tech Talk (Technode)
• Kate and Noah from Environment China (Beijing Energy Network)
• and Yajun from the Wo Men podcast (Radii)
We talked about the unique challenges of producing a show here as well as the best practices we’ve discovered to create them, the reasons we make our shows, the opportunities the shows have created for us, and what we hope the audience takes away from them. Enjoy!

MIKE SHAW: From Boston to Beijing
#029 - From Boston to Beijing | Mike Shaw
This week’s episode features Mike Shaw. Mike is a vegan PR professional from Boston who is fascinated by the extraordinary potential of the global expat community, and he aims to do something about it. In this episode we talk a lot about what it’s like to be here bearing witness to China’s ascendancy at this historic moment in history, and how global people like us can find our way in and find a purpose. As expats, we are at the leading edge of that, which is not always without its growing pains, but as wiser men than me have said: you buy the ticket, you take the ride.
We also touch on a few more esoteric topics, like the rise of the petro-yuan and the unique place that Boston has in the psyche of former Bostonians, withersoever dispersed around the globe. And towards the end, Mike shares the very cool love story of how he met and finally came together with his wife across three continents. It’s something special, and I think the more romantically inclined among you will especially appreciate it. Ultimately, this episode is a love letter to Boston and it is also a testimony to the incredible diversity of China, and how much Mike - and I - love being here and carving out our own new paths in ways that we really couldn’t do anywhere else in the whole world. Enjoy.
